To Fengari Enai Kokkino
"… ela agapi mou ke horepse, isa m’ayrio to proi …"
This image captures the moon during her total eclipse on January 9th 2001 above the city of Athens. The red colour is due to the Earth’s atmosphere which filters out the blue and green light, while transmitting orange and red sunlight to the moon…
Throughout history man has worshipped the moon, and in ancient Greek mythology Artemis is the moon godess. She belonged to the twelve upper gods of the Pantheon, while she is also known as the godess of hunting…
Vicky recorded this song for her 1974 album "Mein Lied Fxfcr Dich", and the album was released throughout Europe, Canada, Japan and South Africa. "To Fengari Einai Kokkino" was written by famous Greek composer Hadjidakis, and Vicky’s version has that typical Greek atmosphere, with the many bouzoukis and the backing "sounds" by the musicians…
The song tells the story of the jealousy of a man, reflected in the different colours of the moon: sometimes green, sometimes yellow, sometimes red… to fengari einai kokkino: the moon is red… Watch Vicky perform this song at the Hamburg concert during her 1974 European tour…
"… when evening falls the Northern star fades too, the train disappeared in the distance, and with it so did you …"
Vicky Leandros recorded this beautiful song for the first time in 1966, to be released on her album "Songs Und Folklore". The song was re-recorded in 1970 for the TV Special "Ich Bin" and was released on the album with the same title in 1971. Below you can watch a video from the "Gala Abend Der Schallplatte" from the German television in 1971 where Vicky performed this song… you can see and hear why I believe that Vicky Leandros is the greatest artist in the world… beautiful… intimite…tragic…

‘Tis The Last Rose Of Summer…
"… left blooming alone… no flower of her kindred,
to reflect back her blushes …"
"The Last Rose Of Summer" is a poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore, written in 1805. Sir John Stevenson set the poem to it’s beautiful melody… Vicky Leandros recorded this song in her breathtakingly way in German, English, French and Greek in 1968, and it was released on several albums in Canada, Japan and Europe…
In 1977 Vicky performs this song in German for her TV Special "Vicky In Wonderland", and it is the best piece of the entire show, just Vicky Leandros in close-up in all her beauty behind a raindrops stained window… beautiful…
"… letzte Rose… auch du bist so allein…"
O’ Kyr Andonis…
"… ich seh’ noch den verbeulten Hut,
sein ungekxe4mmtes Haar …"
The bouzoukis, the moving lyrics and the up-close and intense way of Vicky’s performance make this one of my all time favourite Vicky Leandros songs ever. Told from a childhood memory, this is the bittersweet story of a lonely old man, who’s only joy is telling the children of the village stories from a time long gone by…
In 1973 Vicky recorded this song for the first time for her portrait TV Special. She sang the original Greek lyrics called "O’ Kyr Andonis" together with her grandmother, who was 85 years at that time, Mrs. Papathanassiou. It made such a large impression that Vicky recorded the German version for her 1974 album "Mein Lied Fxfcr Dich"…
"O’ Kyr Andonis" was written by Manos Hadjidakis (1925 – 1994), who was one of the most popular Greek music composers. In 1962 he received the Academy Award for Best Song: "Never On A Sunday". He was and still is widely popular among Greeks, and he can be credited with the introduction of bouzouki music into the mainstream music culture…
Watch a beautiful performance of "Der Herr Andonis" by Vicky during her Hamburg concert of the 1974 European Tour…
"… wir waren Kinder, doch ich weiss heut’ noch,
wie schxf6n es damals war …"
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme…
"… auf den Klippen von Scarborough Fair,
hoch im Norden am grauen Meer …"
The song "Scarborough Fair" seems to derive from an ancient Scottish ballad "The Elfin Knight", in which an elf threatens to abduct a young woman to be his lover unless she performs an impossible task…
"Scarborough Fair" tells about a man who instructs the listener to ask his former lover to perform a series of impossible tasks, such as making a shirt without a seam. If the tasks are completed he will take her back as his love… An original writer of this version is unknown, as it was sung and passed on during the midlle ages by bards and troubadours… As the song spread it was adapted, modified and re-written to the point where dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century…
Vicky’s version is a German translation of the song made famous in 1968 by Simon and Garfunkel, who used the arrangement that was known in the late 20th century, and passed on by Martin Carthy…
"… erzxe4hlt so vielen Geschichten der Wind,
die schon lxe4ngst Vergangenheit sind …"
The German lyrics seem to focus more on the theme of lost love, rather than on the impossible tasks though. The herbs parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, which can be heard in the original version, are chanted every second line of the song’s verse. Altough meaningless to most people, these herbs spoke to the imagination of medieval people as much as red roses do to us today. They represent virtues the singer wishes upon his loved one…
The Scarborough fair was a huge 45 day trading event during the dark ages and well after, attracting tradesmen and buyers from all over… Scarborough itself was founded by the vikings as "Skarthaborg" on the coastline of Yorkshire, and is today a popular sea-side resort…

"… an so einen Wunderschxf6nen Frxfchlingstag…"
A rare Vicky Leandros song is "Sonnenschein Auf Allen Wegen", it was recorded during a TV show for the German ZDF and released on a compilation album from that show in 1971… Vicky never recorded the song again for any album…
A Wheel Within A Wheel…
"… like a circle in a spiral… never ending or beginning …"
"The Windmills Of Your Mind" is a song with words and music by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Michel LeGrand, written as the theme for the 1968 film "The Thomas Crown Affair" starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. It won the Academy Award for best song, performed by Noel Harrison…
Michel LeGrand (1932) is a French musical-composer, arranger, conductor and pianist. He has composed more than 200 film and television scores and recorded over a 100 albums. He has won 3 Academy Awards and 5 Grammys…
Vicky Leandros recorded the song in 1969 in German, French, Greek and English, in her unmistakable unique way, to be released on several albums in Europe, Japan and Canada…
"… you were suddenly aware, that the autumn leafs were turning to the colour of his hair …"
Odette’s Dance…
The choreography, the fairy-tale like story, but most of all the beautiful music of composer Tchaikovsky make "Swan Lake" a feast for the eyes and ears, for young and old. The story is based on old saga’s and legends. The theme of the woman turning into a swan is also present in the stories of a thousand and one night, in old Irish folk-tales and also in ancient Greek mythology…an original author is unknown…
Listen to the opening-suite of the ballet, written by Tchaikovsky, and one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever…
Vicky released this music as a song on her album "Ich glaub’ an dich" in 1969, the traditional music translated into words and production by Arno Flor and Klaus Munro. She recorded the song in German, French and Greek. Watch Vicky perform this song in German as "Wie Die Wilde Schwxe4ne",the clip is from the much aclaimed 1971 TV-special "Ich Bin"…
Summertime…
"… and the living is easy …"
The song "Summertime" is composed by George Gershwin for the 1035 opera "Porgy And Bess", the lyrics are by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. It is believed to be the most covered song in popular music, with an estimated 2600 different versions…
Vicky Leandros recorded her version of "Summertime" in 1968, for the album "Summertime Forever". Vicky’s version stands out because of her intense performance, the up-beat ending of the song and the truly wonderful production by her father Leo. Listen how the strings and harp create an amazing summer-evening breeze when the song begins…
"… you’ll spread your wings, and you’ll take to the sky …"
A Sparkle…
"…und muss ich mich auch xfcberwinden,
ich wird den Weg schon finden…"
Taken from Vicky’s 1988 album "Ich Bin Ich" on the Avon label, "Mut Zum Leben" is a haunting song about the secret power, a sparkle, the will to survive that slumbers in every person…
Watch an extremely beautiful Vicky perform this song on German television…
"…einsamkeit ist nicht mein Problem,
ist viel mehr meine Chance…"
As a boy of 3 I saw Vicky Leandros win the Eurovision Songcontest in 1972 with the unforgetable "Aprxe8s Toi" and was, even as a small child, immediately enchanted by so much beauty. Shortly after I got my first 7" single "Ich Hab’ Die Liebe Gesehen", which was number 1 in the Dutch charts then. I kept playing it over and over again untill my mother desperately instructed my father to buy the entire album, so that she could hear some other songs by Vicky… This is the first photo of me with a cut out picture of Vicky, stuck in my trousers by my mum…I am 4 years old…
1973
Now, 35 years and many more albums later, I am still enchanted. During the good xe1nd bad times, Vicky was always there, with her beautiful songs and her beautiful presence… On this fansite you will enjoy all that is Vicky Leandros, in the typelist to the left you can click on many pictures and visit pages with music, video’s, photo’s and background information.
